This presentation reveals the leadership lessons he learned in the focus of an international firestorm. Frank’s honest, straight-forward account provides invaluable insights into managing the after-crisis with students, staff members, community members and never-ending media attention. He shares how he was able to build a community that worked together for his kids: the students at Columbine High School.

Frank DeAngelis, retired principal of Columbine High School, is an internationally recognized leader in leadership, crisis management, and school safety. As principal during the tragic 1999 shooting, he has remained deeply committed to supporting his Columbine Rebels and school communities nationwide. His firsthand experiences provide unparalleled insights on overcoming adversity, implementing effective safety protocols, and leading through crisis. A recipient of numerous honors, including Colorado High School Principal of the Year and NASRO’s Archie T. Hodge Lifetime Achievement Award, he is a pillar of the school safety community, a highly sought-after speaker, the one to call for organizations ready to prepare for challenges with compassion and courage.

Michael Chase

Michael Chase is a keynote speaker, author, former special educator, and School Resource Officer who survived the Boston Marathon bombing. In the moments after the blasts, Michael stepped into the chaos on Boylston Street, working to save lives and care for the injured in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack. That experience reshaped how he understands service, leadership, and the responsibility to act when others need you most.

With more than 25 years of experience across education and law enforcement, Michael delivers a message rooted in resilience, purpose, and human connection. His story reminds audiences that real strength is often quiet, compassion can be lifesaving, and ordinary people can have an extraordinary impact. His talks offer practical insight for navigating adversity, building trust, and leading with clarity and heart in moments that matter.

Day Two

United States Secret Service

National Threat Assessment Center

Representatives from the U.S. Secret Service will present on behavioral threat assessment, focusing on identifying warning signs, evaluating risk, and implementing multidisciplinary approaches to prevent targeted violence in schools. This session emphasizes practical frameworks that can be implemented immediately.

Preventing Targeted Violence in America Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Far too often, communities experience mass injury and loss of life at the hands of an attacker—only to later discover a documented history of threatening or concerning behaviors.

In many cases:

  • Warning signs were observed by community members

  • Concerning behaviors were reported to public safety officials

  • Opportunities for intervention existed

However, without structured systems in place to receive, evaluate, and respond to these reports, communities may miss critical prevention opportunities.

The framework presented by the National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) supports violence prevention efforts within state and local law enforcement agencies.

This model outlines how agencies can:

  • Proactively identify individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors

  • Assess threats using structured behavioral analysis principles

  • Implement targeted intervention strategies

  • Reduce the likelihood of violent outcomes

These guidelines are not prescriptive mandates, but rather a flexible, scalable blueprint adaptable to agencies of varying:

  • Size

  • Organizational structure

  • Available resources

All united by a shared mission:

Preventing Targeted Violence Before It Occurs
